Arrest of a Canadian leader sparked clashes in Nuevo Laredo, US temporarily closes border
Organized crime has taken to the streets again, this time in northern Mexico, where multiple clashes have been reported throughout the early hours, according to videos and citizen reports on Twitter, mainly.
Through the verified social networks of the United States Consulate in Tamaulipas, the citizens of Nuevo Laredo were warned about an “emergency situation” near their facilities. “US citizens should avoid the area or seek safe haven,” they wrote.
At approximately 2:48 in the morning, the Consulate General account warned that “due to an emergency situation in the city”, all appointments scheduled for March 14, 2022 at its facilities and the Cas will be rescheduled.
“We will contact you to reschedule your appointment,” they concluded.
The situation was apparently a confrontation between the authorities in the area and gunmen belonging to the Northeast Cartel, under the command of Juan Gerardo Treviño Chávez, also known as El Huevo. Twitter users reported up to two hours of intense exchange of bullets.
